The UN commends economic and political progress in Somalia

The UN Assistant Secretary General for peacebuilding support has commended Somalia for the political and economic progress it is making in a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Somali Republic, Abdiwali Sheikh Ahmed.

Judy Cheng-Hopkins is presently on a five-day visit to the Horn of Africa country which began on Sunday.

Somalia is in the process of rebuilding federal state institutions and preparing for national elections in 2016 after more than two decades of civil strife. Somali forces, supported by African Union troops, have made progress pushing the Islamist militants of Al-Shabab from areas they had previously controlled.
