Egypt's el-Sissi wins landslide election

(Vatican Radio) Egypt's former military chief has won a landslide victory in the country’s Presidential election. The campaign of retired field marshal Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said he won 92 percent of the votes. Mr Sissi ousted President Mohammed Morsi last July after mass protests.

He was also in charge a bloody crackdown on Mr Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood movement in which more than 1,400 people were killed.

Voting in the election was extended into a third day after reports of a low turn out.

Fr. Rafic Greiche Chief press spokesman of  the Greek Melkite Catholic Church in Cairo spoke to Vatican Radio about what this victory means for the Christian community in Egypt.

“Well I can say that most of the Christians voted for him because he promised to establish security which is something very important because the Christians last August had 63 Churches burned…”

Fr Greiche goes on to say that Marshal el-Sissi also promised to address the issue of the building of Christian Churches and to look at law relating to Christian families. Listen to Lydia O’Kane’s interview with Fr. Rafic Greiche
