Pope names new president of theology academy


(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has named Fr Réal Tremblay, C.SS.R., president of the Pontifical Academy of Theology, where he served previously as an ordinary member and advisor. The Redemptorist priest is professor-emeritus of fundamental moral theology at the Alphonsian Academy.

According to the Alfonsianum website, Fr Tremblay was born in Metabetchouan, Quebec, Canada, and is a member of the Redemptorist Province of Ste. Anne-de-Beaupré. After studying humanities at Université Laval, he entered the Redemptorist novitiate in Sherbrooke. He was ordained in 1966.

He earned his doctorate in dogmatic theology in 1975, from the University of Regensburg, Germany, under the direction of then-Professor Josef Ratzinger, and began teaching immediately thereafter at the Alfonsianum.  

He has served as a member and advisor to several pontifical councils and congregations, including the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Congregation for the Clergy, the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses, and the Pontifical Academy of Theology. He has authored 10 books and has published nearly 150 articles.
