Typhoon strikes Philippines

(Vatican Radio) A typhoon has struck the Philippines, leaving at least 12 people dead and sending around a third of a million people into emergency shelters.

Alastair Wanklyn reports.

The typhoon ripped the roofs from homes in Philippines shanty towns.

Trees fell on houses, claiming several lives, and reports said a number of fishermen were missing off the eastern coast.

In Manila, rescue workers cleared fallen trees....from roads, dodging fallen power lines.

Authorities said they moved around 370,000 people to emergency shelters.

Many people went without prompting, and the mayor of Manila said the evacuations went so well, it was like an exercise.

Across the Philippines, memories remain fresh of Typhoon Haiyan last year, which left more than 6,000 people dead and 1,000 missing.

This week's typhoon is the seventh storm to hit the Philippines this year.

It weakened as it passed across the islands, heading roughly towards Vietnam.
