Africa's Sahel, Horn regions to recieve major UN aid pkg

(Vatican Radio) Africa’s Sahel region is a long, broad swathe running from the continent’s east coast to its west coast, separating the Sarah desert in the north from the rest of the continent in the south. Irregular climate conditions and political and social instability in many of the region’s countries, especially in the west of of Africa, have contributed to the creation and perpetuation of extremely precarious conditions that periodically flare into full-blown humanitarian crises.

Along with the Horn of Africa, where similar conditions prevail, the Sahel region has received a $75 million aid allocation from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund – CERF.  This week, the CERF announced the selection of 11 countries in the Horn of Africa and the Sahel as aid beneficiaries.
