UN calls for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

The UN security council urged that the ceasefire coincide with the upcoming Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr, beginning today, which marks the end of Ramadan.

The call for a ceasefire came after attacks from both Israel and Palestine Sunday morning after a brief pause on Saturday during a 12-hour ceasefire agreement.

Hamas initially backed a longer truce to allow for humanitarian aid, however, rocket fires from Hamas reportedly continued after their announcement, while Israeli soldiers also fired into the area.

More than 1,030 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in the war reported the Palestinian health ministry. Israel has lost 43 soldiers, as well as two Israeli civilians and a Thai worker killed by rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza, according to the Israeli military.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon made a three point plea for a ceasefire that would coincide with the upcoming Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr, beginning today, which marks the end of Ramadan.

First, stop the fighting. We call for a seven day humanitarian ceasefire extending over the Eid period beginning with a 12 hour extendable pause. Second, start talking. There is no military solution to addressing the grievances and all parties must find a way to dialogue. Third, tackle the root causes of the crisis”.

The US has joined in the UN’s plea for a ceasefire. President Barack Obama contacted Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging him to commit to a longer sustainable ceasefire. Prime minister Netanyahu, unsure of Hamas’ promises for a truce, has said that Israel  “would take whatever action necessary to protect our people”.

The US' role in the peacemaking, led by Secretary of State John Kerry, has made little headway. Both sides have set severe conditions. Israel wants to see Hamas disarmed, while Hamas wants an end to the economic blockade in Gaza by Israel and Egypt.
