Singer Noa's vision for peace in Israel and Palestine

(Vatican Radio) Alongside the political and diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza, an increasing number of artists, musicians and other public figures have been calling for an immediate end to the conflict.

Among them is Israeli singer-songwriter Noa who has written an open letter in English and in Hebrew appealing for a change of attitude on the part of Israeli and Palestinian leaders, both of whom, she says, have betrayed the people who elected them.

Noa, who was once the first Jewish woman to perform in the Vatican for Pope John Paul II, was back in Rome this week to promote her latest album, ‘Love Medicine”. She came to Vatican Radio and talked to Antonella Palermo about the responsibilities of the artist and about her hopes for peaceful coexistence in her country…

Listen:

“I have a responsibility to fight for the things I believe in and to say things clearly….I have a voice and I live in a democratic country so I can raise it, and I do all the time in favour of those things I believe in…

I also believe that artists should be leaders of society….they should be going deep into the soul and the spirit and they should be leading public opinion, especially where human rights are concerned…..I think art has the power to connect people on a higher level…

I think we are paying the price for the arrogance, stupidity and greed of our leaders…..people elect leaders to protect life and create a situation where we can flourish and thrive…..I personally feel betrayed by my leadership and I’m absolutely convinced the Palestinians are being betrayed by their leadership too…

Right now we have to understand that only dialogue, even with people we don’t like, will solve our problem……dialogue with the recognition of the other’s rights….rights are important but what about your obligations…?”
