Brazil prison riot resolved

(Vatican Radio) Prisoners at a jail in Southern Brazil, where two inmates were decapitated and two others were hurled to their deaths from the roof, during a riot, have agreed to end the crisis.

Listen to this report by James Blears

The deal involves most of the 1,000 inmates at Cascavel prison, being transfered to other jails within the State of Parana.

Damage to this jail, since the riot started on Sunday, has been extensive.  In return for this concession, the rioters are releasing two prison guards held hostage, who'd been badly beaten and held on the roof of the ruined complex with ropes tied around their throats.

A spokesman for the State's Attorney General's Office said 80 percent of those imprisoned there, took part in this riot. Prisoner representatives are demanding better conditions in the overall penal system and more generous visiting hours.

However, fueds between rival gangs appear to have been the catalyst which precipitated this particular riot.
