Development conference to convene for small island nations

(Vatican Radio) The Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States is set to open this coming week in Apia, Samoa. Participants are exploring the theme: “The sustainable development of small island developing States through genuine and durable partnerships.”

The United Nations classifies more than fifty countries and territories as Small Island Developing States, most of which are in the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions as well as the Caribbean. The conference will focus on ways the international community can contribute to the sustainable development on the islands.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Small Island Developing States, GY-an Chan-dra AK-ar-ya, says private sector businesses have key contributions to make to the success of integral development efforts. “We believe there has to be a multi-stakeholder approach to the solution of the problem,” Akarya told UN Radio, adding, “the government has to play an important role, the private sector has to play its role and the civil society has to play an important role.”

The conference opens on Monday, September 1st, and runs until September 4th. Organizers hope the Conference will serve to build on existing successful partnerships, and to launch innovative and concrete new ones to advance the sustainable development of small island developing States.
