New UNMISS Chief says nation should own conflict resolution

(Vatican Radio) Ms.Ellen Margrethe Løj, the new Special Representative of UN Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) says that for a country coming out of conflict, a solution to address root causes cannot be imposed from abroad. She says that the nation of South Sudan needs to take ownership of the peace process. This is according to a statement made available to Vatican Radio by South Sudan’s Catholic Radio Network (CRN), quoting sources within the United Nations.

Ms. Margrethe Løj added that it is vital to involve all segments of society including churches, civil society, women and youth organisations to resolve the country’s crisis.

She expressed hope to establish a constructive, mutual respectful cooperation between the UN mission and the Government of South Sudan including other stakeholders in the peace process.

Ms. Margrethe Løj said it is a “huge and difficult” challenge taking up the position and yet the job is impossible to turn down because it is demanding.

She believes South Sudan’ sons and daughters should be able to focus on realizing their potential and not worry about whether they would be killed tomorrow or whether they would go hungry to bed.

Ms. Margrethe Løj said it is really a challenge that peace be established and the weapons silenced to give citizens confidence to return to the homes that they have abandoned for fear of violence.

The new  head of UNMISS has  vowed to protect civilians to ensure that citizens feel safe.
