Preliminary report issued on Malaysia Airlines MH17 Crash

(Vatican Radio) On Tuesday, the Dutch Safety Board issued its preliminary report on the investigation into the crash involving Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

The report indicates that the plane received structural damage mid-flight when its exterior was pierced by “numerous objects” travelling at “high velocity.”

The data shows that the flight proceeded normally until it abruptly ended over Ukraine, with no indication of technical problems or human error.

The Malaysian Airlines flight was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lampur on July 17 when it went down in a region of Ukrainian held by pro-Russian rebels, killing all 298 people on board.

“The MH17 crash has shocked the world and raised many questions,” said Chairman of the Dutch Safety Board, Tjibbe Joustra. In a video statement following the release of the preliminary report, he said that the Board “wishes to determine the cause of the crash for the sake of the loved ones of the victims, and society at large.”

He said that investigators from, Australia, Malaysia, Ukraine, the Russian Federation, the United States, and the Netherlands have come together to determine the cause of the crash.

“The initial results of the investigation point to an external cause of the MH17 crash,” he said, adding that the Board believes additional evidence will become available as investigations continue. Investigators are aiming to publish a full report by the first anniversary of the crash.
