Pope Francis to visit two WW1 cemeteries in northern Italy and appeal for peace

(Vatican Radio)  Pope Francis travels to north eastern Italy on Saturday (Sept 13th) to visit two cemeteries containing the remains of soldiers who died during the First World War and will launch an appeal for peace in the world.  His visit there comes as part of numerous events commemorating this year’s 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.  The Pope’s  first stop is the Austro-Hungarian cemetery of Fogliano and then he will be driven to the nearby Italian military cemetery of Redipuglia.  Here he will celebrate a Mass which will be attended not just by leading members of the local Church  but also by the cardinals of Vienna and Zagreb as well as bishops from Slovenia, Australia, Hungary and Croatia.  At the end of the Mass, the Pope is due to present the local clergy and military ordinaries with St Francis of Assisi’s peace lamp, gifted by the Franciscan monastery in Assisi.
