UN Security Council expands anti-terror efforts

(Vatican Radio) The United Nations Security Council has passed an historic anti-terrorism resolution, which will set legally binding requirements for countries to prevent the spread of terrorism. In chairing the special session for heads of state and government, U.S. President Barack Obama said, what is new about terrorism in 2014 is the ease with which militants can travel from one battlefield to the next, and urged his fellow leaders to act.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon also called for concerted regional and international leaders to reject the militants’ professed ideology and to contribute to their defeat. As a fresh round of airstrikes got underway in Iraq and Syria, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said his military is about to join the coalition fighting the self-styled Islamic State militants.
