Synod on the family

The stage is set for the III Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in the Vatican, Oct. 5 to 19, on the theme, “‎Pastoral challenges to the family in the context of ‎evangelization”.  Probably Pope Francis gave the first hint of this when he told reporters July last year, he wanted a discussion to explore a "somewhat ‎deeper ‎pastoral care of marriage," including the question of the eligibility of divorced and remarried ‎Catholics ‎to receive Communion.  On October 8, he announced that there would be an ‎Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops,  Oct. 5-19, 2014, to discuss the “‎Pastoral ‎challenges to the family in the context of evangelization”. ‎  But what is special about this synod is that ‎it is a two-part event.   Discussions of this III Extraordinary synod, starting Sunday, will not reach ‎definitive conclusions but will set the agenda for a larger meeting of bishops in the XIV Ordinary ‎General Assembly, ‎to be held in October next year, whose theme will be, "Jesus Christ reveals the ‎mystery and vocation of the family." ‎ That meeting will offer proposals for the Pope's approval for a ‎final synod document.
