Hong Kong: Chief Executive offers talks with protestors

(Vatican Radio) Hong Kong's Chief Executive, Leung Chun-ying, expressed hope on Thursday that Chinese authorities and pro-democracy protestors might sit down for talks next week, even as anger over police violence and unrest continues. Leung was speaking after more than two weeks of protests that have paralysed parts of the city and garnered international attention. The protesters are demanding free elections for their leader in 2017, but China's government insists on screening candidates first. In his statmeents, Leung reiterated that the government is unwilling to compromise.
