Boko Haram agrees to truce, release of schoolgirls

(Vatican Radio) Boko Haram has signed a truce with the Nigerian military and agreed to release the 200 schoolgirls the Islamist militant group had abducted six months ago.Nigerian chief of defence staff Alex Badeh announced the deal on Friday afternoon.

Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop of Abuja, heads the Catholic Church in Nigeria. He spoke with Vatican Radio about his relief at the news. He said he hopes the truce will last and truly "bring an end to the madness" that Nigeria has been experiencing the past few years.

He surmised the truce was motivated by a realization on the part of the militant group that the situation of violence and unrest "was not in anybody's interest".
