Clashes continue for third day in Benghazi, Libya

(Vatican Radio/agencies) Clashes between Islamists and pro- government forces in Libya’s second largest city, Benghazi, have killed at least 17 people in the last two days.  Libya's Red Crescent has called for a ceasefire to allow the evacuation of trapped families.

Banks, government offices, supermarkets and some hospitals were closed. Residents reported Egyptian warplanes have been pounding Islamist militia positions though Egyptian and Libyan officials have denied that Egypt was carrying out airstrikes. Analysts speculate that Cairo would be concerned about the potential spill-over of the Islamist struggle into its territory.

Pro-governments forces, joined by Benghazi residents, launched an offensive on Wednesday to regain ground after Islamist groups overran several army camps and were closing in on the airport.
