29 Sunday in Ordinary time: Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s

Africa Weekly reflection is a Liturgical preparation for the liturgy of the week.

The Gospel of the twenthy-ninth Sunday in Ordinary time reveals a plot by the Pharisees and Herodians to trap Jesus. They set-up a political trap by their question. “Tell us, (they ask) Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?”

The Lord Jesus categorically refuses to be drawn into a pointless argument about paying taxes to Caesar.  His answer, “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s,” leaves the Pharisees and Herodians confused. They melt away in shame.
