Egypt: army destroys homes for Gaza buffer

(Vatican Radio) Egypt’s army used dynamite and bulldozers to demolish dozens of homes along its border with the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, after the military ordered residents out to abandon the area and make way for a buffer zone against smugglers and militants. The plan to clear 10 thousand residents from some 800 houses within a period of days has driven the area’s already disgruntled population to anger.

Over the past decade, the northern region of the Sinai Peninsula has become a hub for Islamic extremists, although insurgency has been on the increase since the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi last year. Agitation has also spread to other parts of Egypt, with militants targeting police in Cairo and the Nile Delta.
