World Bank pledges $100 million in Ebola fight

Liberia is making some progress in containing the Ebola outbreak while the crisis in Sierra Leone is going to get worse.

This assessment by officials in the two countries comes as the World Bank pledges 100 million dollars to fight the virus.

Liberia was the West African country that was worst hit by the Ebola outbreak, but although it is still battling the virus, there is cause for optimism. There has been a decrease in the number of patients seeking Ebola treatment, and in the number of lab-confirmed cases.

But there is no room for complacency the World Health Organisation is stressing, adding that gains made in the fight against the disease could be reversed.

The story in Sierra Leone is less optimistic. There is help being from a British naval ship carrying troops and medical supplies, the new head of the country's National Ebola Response Center, Alfred Palo Conteh  said on Thursday,``With all these facilities, they will go a long way in the ongoing fight against the Ebola disease.'

As the global threat remains, the US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power told European leaders that nations around the world need to do more to confront what she called the 'greatest public health crisis ever'.

"This is a crisis that is so vast, with needs so great, with potential consequences so dire that no country can afford to stand on the sidelines"

In West Africa, international assistance is desperately needed in the worst affected countries and the World Bank announced on Thursday that it was pledging an additional $100 million to help bring in more foreign health workers to help combat the disease that has infected more than 13,000 people and killed nearly 5,000.
