Firearms trafficking surge in Mexico


(Vatican Radio) Firearms trafficking in Mexico is surging, due to the country's ongoing eight year Drug War. The main culprits are narcotics cartels, but Mexican Citizens are also illegally purchasing guns for self protection.

During the last ten years, Mexico has gone from 22nd worldwide for gun running to fifth, according to Mexican Senator Alejandro Encinas, who explained this to a visiting delegation of German parliamentarians. He said it's an anual 127 million dollar black market.

Authorities say 65 percent of the ilegal guns, end up in the hands of organized crime, while 35 percent find their way to the homes of ordinary citizens, concerned for their personal safety.

Mexico's continuing Drug War, which started back in December 2006, has killed more than 100,000 Mexicans. Thousands of others have permenantly vanished. Drugs is estimated to be a 40 billion dollar a year illicit industry in MEXICO, with drug addicts in the United States, being the main customers.
