UN Secretary General: Combat "contagion of fear" in Ebola fight

(Vatican Radio) The head of the United Nations  said it is crucial to combat "the contagion of fear" in response to the deadly Ebola virus disease in West Africa. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was speaking after returning from West Africa, where Ebola has killed around 6,900 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Listen to our report:

He said the aim of his trip was to ensure the UN response to the disease is "swift, effective and comprehensive."

Ban also expressed solidarity with the healthcare workers combatting the epidemic.

"Ebola caregivers should be praised not shunned,” said Ban. “People who have travelled to Ebola-affected countries and have no signs of infection, are no threat. I also repeat my call to avoid travel restrictions, border closures and other counter-productive obstacles.”
