Libyan peace talks continue in Geneva

(Vatican Radio) Rival factions in Libya have been holding peace talks in Geneva for the past two days and have agreed to continue next week.

The United Nations are sponsoring the talk between the political factions embroiled in conflict which erupted following the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi  in 2011.

The European Union have said these meetings are the “last chance” to prevent outright civil war in the country.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) says more than 400,000 have been displaced by the violence. Martin Spindler, UNHCR spokesperson, commented on the refugee situation.

The UN talks aim to form a unity government, stop hostilities, and facilitate a transition to democracy. While the participants of the peace talks say they are hopeful, one of the main obstacles to their success is the absence of two of the faction groups.
