(Vatican Radio) Bishops’ from South Africa, Europe, Canada and the United States returned this week from a visit to the Holy Land aimed at showing solidarity with the Christian community there. In the final statement of the Bishops’ Co-ordination group, they called for Human Dignity as a basis of Peace.

Archbishop Emeritus of Liverpool Patrick Kelly has been making this visit with the group over the last fifteen years.

At the end of the trip he reflected on the journey with Lydia O’Kane in Bethlehem, telling her that “human dignity is not something we confer on people”, it’s their right.

“What struck me more and more in the last few days”, said the Archbishop “is that we need the voice of the prophets of old who would speak out and say, every violation of someone’s human dignity is a sin and an offence to God.”

As the Church enters the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Archbishop Kelly quoted the words of Pope Francis in Istanbul when he said, “We cannot be credible as Christians to our trouble divided world unless we’re united”.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity runs from the 18th to the 25th of January.
