Franciscans say role of economics is to serve humanity

(Vatican Radio) Conflicts, climate change, growth and stability, income inequality and development are just some of the themes on the agenda at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.   Running from January 21st to 24th, the Forum is being attended by scores of heads of state or government and more than 2,000 leaders from business and society.  Susy Hodges asked Father Marcus Heinze, Director of Franciscans International in Geneva, what he sees as the most urgent issues to be discussed at this Forum.

Listen to the full interview with Father Marcus Heinze of Franciscans International:

Father Heinze singled out climate change, social inequality and extreme poverty as among the most urgent issues that need tackling but also stressed that global economics in general should be more people-centric: “The role of the economy must be seen as serving humanity,” rather than the other way around.

He said there is a tendency for economic and political leaders to concentrate too much on furthering “their own interests” and only be concerned with greater “economic growth” and not take into consideration the needs of people living on the margins of society.
