Family conference looks ahead to Synod


(Vatican Radio) An international conference of movements, groups and associations on family and life is currently underway here in Rome.

The meeting sponsored by the Pontifical Council for the Family is looking at the Vocation and mission of the Family in the Church and the Contemporary World  in the lead up to the Synod on this them due to take place in October.

It is also focusing its attention on the guidelines or Lineamenta of last year’s extraordinary Synod.

Attending the event is married couple Daniel and Shelley Ee from the Worldwide Marriage Encounter movement.

The husband and wife  who are from Singapore spoke to Lydia O’Kane about the importance of having a conference like this to discuss the challenges facing the family at this time and especially ahead of the Synod.

Daniel said, “Work life balance is an issue, people are working longer hours. They have great difficulty in terms of to manage the household finances and so the stresses of life are increasing and all the more couples will need formation.”Speaking about Pope Francis’ decision to have a Synod on the Family, Shelley said that having worked in family ministry for so many years, she and her husband are pleased that, “the attention is being drawn to the Family, where as Monsignor Paglia said, “it starts with a couple and then the children in the family” and we all belong to families… so it’s really exciting times ahead.”

The conference runs for the 22nd to the 24th of January.
