Pope Francis expresses solidarity after deadly flooding in Malawi

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has sent a message to the people of Malawi, after being informed of the tragic consequence of heaving flooding in the country, which has killed at least 200 people, displaced another 200,000 people, and caused extensive damage to the economy.

The message was sent to Archbishop Thomas Msusa, Vice President of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi, and expressed the Holy Father’s solidarity with the Catholic faithful, and “all beloved people of Malawi.”

In the message, sent through the Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, the Holy Father “invokes God’s blessings of strength and perseverance upon those engaged in the massive work of relief, and he expresses his fervent hope that the international community will respond generously and effectively to the needs of the suffering.”

Working with the Government of Malawi, the UN’s World Food Programme has said it will provide food assistance to up to 150,000 displaced people in the coming days.
