Humanitarian crisis in South Sudan on UN agenda

(Vatican Radio) The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hear reports on Tuesday on the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan and the protection of civilians in the war-torn country that only gained independence in 2011. A political power struggle turned violent in December of last year, and has since degenerated into full-blown civil war, with all the attendant humanitarian and security crises.

The conflict in Africa’s newest nation has driven more than two million people from their homes, and brought more than 2.5 million people to the brink of starvation.

Mass kidnapping of children is not unheard-of, with the victims being pressed into military service. Earlier this month, 89 boys, aged 13-14, were taken by an unknown group of armed men while they studied for exams in Upper Nile state.
