The Maronite Church promotes the donation of organs

The Lebanese National Committee for the donation and transplantation of organs and tissues (NOD Lebanon) and the Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Health Services of the Maronite Patriarchate, signed a cooperation Agreement on Wednesday March 4, aimed at promoting the practice of donation of organs in health institutions related to the Maronite Church. Bishop Maroun Ammar - as President of the Episcopal Commission for Health - and Dr. Antoine Stephan, National Secretary of the NOD Lebanon signed the agreement.

The agreement provides for the creation of a joint committee in charge of developing awareness programs at a national level and train in dioceses, parishes and hospitals people able to guide potential donors in a process of discernment that values the choice of donations of organs in the light of the teachings of the Church. The intent of the awareness campaign – explains Fr. Edgar Haïby, Secretary of the Episcopal Commission for Health - is also to remove the prejudices of those who believe that Christianity is opposed to the donation of organs, showing how this choice is, on the contrary, an expression of generosity and solidarity towards others.

The scourge of human organ trafficking has been repeatedly denounced by Pope Francis as a form of "new slavery" condemned in the joint statement signed by religious leaders summoned in Rome by the Successor of Peter on December 7th. (Fides)
