Archbishop Ouedraogo chairs Burkina Faso's national reconciliation

Burkina Faso’s members of the National Reforms and Reconciliation Commission have unanimously elected the Catholic Archbishop of Bobo Dioulasso, Paul Ouedraogo as Chairman of its Commission.

"The commission decided to conduct elections by consensus vote. Proposals were discussed and in the end the Commission elected the Chairman," said Bishop Paul Ouedraogo about the atmosphere that prevailed before he was elected.

Speaking soon after his election and appointment Tuesday, Archbishop Ouedraogo said he was aware of the scale of work ahead. "A commission like that, you understand that this is a very heavy responsibility. We will work in collaboration with the citizens and those who want to help us meet the aspirations of the people of Burkina Faso,” Archbishop Ouedraogo said.

The commission is being established amid calls for socio-economic and political reforms as well the need to strengthen civil society and ensure the active participation of citizens in the country’s political process.

The National Reforms and Reconciliation Commission was created by a presidential decree on 4 December 2014, a month after the popular uprising that ousted former Burkina Faso’strongman, President Blaise Compaore.

The commission will meet again on March 17 to start its work.
