South africa xenophobia: Arrests as government deploys army

South African authorities arrested 11 men in Johannesburg late on Tuesday suspected of involvement in violence against immigrants, Reuters said, quoting local South African media.

The men were held during a joint raid by the police and army on a Johannesburg hostel.  A wave of anti-immigrant violence has so far claimed 7 lives in trouble spots of Durban and Johannesburg.

The government announced the deployment of defence forces on Tuesday. South African Police have struggled to contain the xenophobic violence which started in Durban before spreading to other towns.

The government says it is determined to quell the unrest.
