South Sudan ratifies treaty to protect children


(Vatican Radio) An international human rights treaty to protect children’s rights has been sanctioned in South Sudan where an ongoing civil war has claimed the lives of tens thousands.

The world’s youngest nation has ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child, a treaty meant to protect children's rights to health, education and freedom from discrimination.

According to the UN Children’s Fund UNICEF children have been those most affected by the civil war which began in December 2013.

South Sudan’s civil war has left tens of thousands of people dead and two million others displaced.
