The Apostolic Carmel of India's Eastern Province, part 2


The Apostolic Carmel, with its initials AC, is a religious congregation of the Discalced Carmelite Third ‎Order for women based in Bangalore, India.  It was founded by Mother Mary Veronica of the Passion ‎at Bayonne, France in 1868, and established at Mangalore, India, in 1870, by Discalced Carmelite ‎Bishop Marie Ephrem.  Today the congregation has five provinces in India and one in Sri Lanka, ‎besides centres in  Kuwait, Bahrain, Africa and Italy.   ‎

Sr. Mirabelle is the Provincial Superior of the Eastern Province, based in Kolkata city.  She was recently ‎in Rome, and in an interview with her, we came to know more about the work of the Apostolic Carmel.  ‎Last week, in the first of this interview, Sr. Mirabelle spoke about congregation’s main charism of the ‎prayer and the apostolate of education, both formal and informal.  In this regard, Sr. Mirabelle spoke ‎about the province’s social work under the banner of ‘Ashadeep’ an NGO headed by Sr. Alexia.  ‎Besides its flagship project for women prisoners, Ashadeep also runs women’s self-help groups, ‎cooperatives, healthcare and vocational training such as weaving and tailoring.   The Apostolic Carmel ‎nuns have also gone into catechetics and are starting a prayer apostolate. Today, in the final part of this ‎interview, Sr. Mirabelle begins by telling us what the Eastern Province is doing for poor rural children. ‎
