Archdiocese of Harare celebrates Altar Servers

Saturday, 20 June 2015 was probably one of the coldest days this winter in Harare, Zimbabwe but that did not dampen spirits of the Archdiocese of Harare Altar Servers who congregated at St. Alois, Chitungwiza parish to celebrate their patron saint's day.

Various activities including quiz competitions, motivational talks and later on, sports, were held to commemorate the day, whose theme was, “...Woe to me, if I don’t preach the gospel.” (1 Cor 9:16)

Brother Alexio Matsika, a seminarian from Chishawasha Major Seminary, delivered a presentation based on the theme, urging Altar Servers to bear in mind that being a server at the altar is a calling from God. He said their conduct should encourage people to pray and not put them off.

“You must establish why you are an Altar Server. You should not be there for any reason other than that of making the Holy Mass a prayerful celebration,” said Matsika, encouraging the servers to strive for lives worthy of one who assists at the holy Altar.

Speaking at the same gathering, Mr. Darlington Mukombe, a veteran server urged Altar Servers to be, “undistorted sign posts to the Lord for the people we serve.”
