Chinese state media cover Pope Francis' prayers for explosion victims

(Vatican Radio) Chinese state media organizations gave rare attention to the words of Pope Francis, after the Holy Father offered his prayers for families and relief workers to prayer in the aftermath of the explosions that have so far caused 114 deaths and more than 700 injuries in Tianjin, China.

At his Angelus prayer on the Solemnity of the Assumption, Pope Francis said, “My thoughts go out, in this moment, to the people of the city of Tianjin, in northern China, where several explosions in an industrial area have caused numerous deaths and injuries, and extensive damage.” The Holy Father assured them of his prayers for all those who had lost their lives or who were suffering on account of the disaster. “May the Lord give them comfort, and support all those engaged in relieving their suffering.”

The Hong Kong-based PIME missionary Fr. Sergio Ticozzi told Vatican Radio the broadly favorable coverage of Pope Francis’ prayers is a sign that China is interested in its relationship with the Vatican and with Pope Francis. “It certainly is a good thing, is a step forward,” he said. “If there was this presentation,” he continued, “it is a sign that China is interested in the relationship with the Vatican, is interested in presenting Pope Francis, especially in his attitude of compassion and mercy for people who are suffering.”

“This is really positive,” said Fr. Ticozzi.
