Guatemala's President refuses to resign

(Vatican Radio) The President of Guatemala has refused to resign as a corruption crisis takes grip of the nation in the run up to next month's presidential election.

Listen To James Blears' report:

So far eight members of his Cabinet have resigned, but President Otto Perez Molina, a former Pólice Chief and Head of Intelligence, is still holding his position.

A Customs scanda,l dubbed "La Línea...or the line," has spread after the arrest of former Vice President Roxana Baldetti, who resigned in May.  Last week, Guatemala's Congress voted to maintain the President's immunity from prosecution. However, the Public Prosecutor's office is starting impeachment proceedings against President Perez Molina.

All this occurs in the run up to the presidential election on September 6.

President Perez Molina has not been seen for several days, though he gave his nationwide address from the presidential palace denying any involvement in the scandal and saying he is willing to take part in the law and order process.

Guatemalan law prohibits a President contesting a second term.
