Caritas South Sudan reacts to peace deal signing

(Vatican Radio) South Sudan’s President Kiir has signed a long-awaited peace deal aimed at ending the country’s civil war. The 20-month conflict claimed the lives of thousands and displaced up to 2.2 million people in the world’s newest nation. So what reaction has there been inside South Sudan to the signing of this peace agreement? To find out more, we spoke to the Director of Caritas in South Sudan Gabriel Yai. He told Claire Gilbody Dickerson that he believed the peace deal would bring peace to the country and put an end to the war.

Listen to the Director of Caritas South Sudan Gabriel Yai:

Yai said that the signing of the deal followed by its implementation would be “beautiful for me and everybody in South Sudan.”

When asked about the humanitarian situation in the country, Yai said that many people had been displaced or had sought refuge in neighboring countries to escape the fighting.

The signing of the deal, Yai said, meant that refugees could be “hopeful” they could return to their home areas.
