Chibok girls: 500 days and still missing

(Vatican Radio) It’s been 500 days since 276 female students were kidnapped by Boko Haram militants from a Secondary School in the town of Chibok in Nigeria’s north-eastern Borno State.

Despite searches and an international campaign entitled “Bring Our Girls Back”, launched to highlight the girl’s abduction, the teenagers have not been found.

A number of events have been organized both locally and internationally this week expressing solidarity with the missing students including,  Muslim and Christian prayer services, a tree planting ceremony and a march through the capital Abuja.

Vatican Radio spoke to the Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, who said he hopes this commemoration will be an opportunity for the government to redouble its efforts in fighting the continuing insurgency in the country and liberating those held in captivity.
