(Vatican Radio) The ongoing crisis of migrants fleeing conflicts in the Middle
East highlights the importance of the UN’s Convention on the Protection of the Rights
of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.
Listen:
Philippa Hitchen interviews one of the Holy See’s representatives to the United Nations,
Msgr. Robert Vitillo. Msgr. Vitillo heads the Caritas Internationalis Delegation to
the UN and spoke at a recent event marking the 25th anniversary of the Convention
at the Geneva headquarters in September.
Monsignor Vitillo emphasized the uniqueness of the Convention, drawing particular
attention to the fact that it offers protection to migrants’ families. He explained
how no key ‘receiving states’ have signed the treaty due to concerns regarding sovereignty
and future regulations.
