UN Security Council says attacks in CAR may be 'war crimes'

(Vatican Radio)  The United Nations is threatening further sanctions against people and groups behind renewed violence in the Central African Republic. The Security Council said some of the recent attacks may amount to war crimes.

Listen to Liling Tan's report:

The UN Security Council has condemned those responsible for recent clashes in the CAR, saying the attacks were aimed at destabilizing the country and jeopardizing its political process.

Council President Roman Oyarzun Marchesi said the fifteen-member body wants an investigation into violence that broke out last month, resulting in more than 60 deaths and hundreds of injuries.

"The Security Council emphasizes that some of these attacks may constitute war crimes and that those responsible for all abuses and violations of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law must be held accountable," Marchesi said.

The council also called on authorities to push forward with elections by the end of the year.
