Singing for Syrians

(Vatican Radio) In Britain, two charities, Christian Aid and the Hands Up Foundation are urging people to come and sing at fund-raising carol concerts to help support the millions of Syrians in dire need of assistance. The war in Syria has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian and refugee crisis since the Second World War. As the violence continues and winter looms, the needs of the millions of Syrians forced to flee their homes will only intensify.

‘Singing for Syrians’ is a nationwide initiative encouraging individuals, churches and communities around the UK to host fundraising Christmas carol concerts to help those whose lives have been torn apart by the conflict. George Butler is one of the trustees of the Hands Up Foundation and he spoke to Susy Hodges about this fundraising initiative.

Listen to the interview with George Butler of the UK charity, the Hands Up Foundation:

Butler says the funds raised through this initiative will be split between Christian Aid and the Hands Up Foundation, a small charity that was set up to help Syrians impacted by the conflict in their homeland.  He said the Hands Up Foundation is supporting a number of projects including paying the salaries of a medical team at a hospital in the Syrian city of Aleppo and helping to provide prosthetics for Syrians who have lost their limbs as a result of the conflict. Butler pays tribute to the incredible heroism of those doctors who have stayed in Aleppo to care for the sick and wounded despite the frequent barrel bombing and shelling taking place in the city on an almost daily basis.
