USAID looks forward to Pope’s visit to CAR

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis is due to visit the Central African Republic (CAR) on the last leg of his journey through Africa this week.

The US Agency for International Development runs a project in CAR and Mark Brinkmoeller is the director of USAID’s Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. Bramble Badenach-Nicolson spoke to him about the Pope’s visit and USAID’s mission as a whole.

Listen here:

Mr Brinkmoeller said he hoped the Pope’s visit would cause the whole country to pause, including the religious, civil and government leaderships, and that the Holy Father’s urge for peace would break the ongoing cycle of violence.

He explained how USAID’s Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives came to be involved in CAR. The three religious leaders in CAR, the head of the Catholic church, the head Imam and the head of the Evangelical council came to the USA to ask for assistance, he said.

Concluding, Brinkmoeller said he hoped that “good fruit will be borne” during the Holy Father’s visit to CAR.
