Pope in Kenya: what the papers are saying

(Vatican Radio) All the headlines on Day 1 of the Pope’s visit Apostolic Visit to Kenya  featured the word “Welcome”. On Thursday – Day 2 –  the main daily papers have chosen titles that read “Pope brings love and blessings”; “Prayer for Kenya”; “Francis lands in Nairobi to a rousing welcome from jubilant Kenyans”.

The “Daily Nation”, “The Standard” and the “Business Daily” continue to offer rich and colourful pull-out sections dedicated to all things Papal, including part 2 of  the Business Daily’s “Business of God” special report.

Linda Bordoni reports from Nairobi:

As well as the usual informative articles on who Jorge Bergoglio is, on Church history, on the role of the Church in Kenya, on the workings of the Conclave and on “why the world simply loves the bishop of Rome”, all the papers also provide editorials and analysis on the Pope’s first words to the nation highlighting quotes from his discourse to authorities and the diplomatic corps.

There’s also lots of colour with short articles about the small “Honda” car chosen to drive Francis into the city, on how he quipped that the only thing he is worried about during this journey are the mosquitos; about how the Swiss Guards have taken over security since the Pope’s arrival in Nairobi.

A well-written spread in the “Business Daily” singles out what it considers to be the five big issues facing the Pope in his Africa tour:

Peace between Muslims and Christians
Poverty
The Environment
Homosexuality
Contraception

It also provides facts and figures of the five African countries with most Catholics, those being: Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Angola.

I’ve also been watching the extensive tv coverage provide by the local network which offers live feed of all the Papal events interspersed with “in studio” comments by experts and editorialists who discuss the Pope’s words and their relevance in Kenya today as well as considering every other possible perspective one can take in an historic moment such as this.
