Rapturous welcome as Pope meets Catechists

(Vatican Radio) Anticipation was at fever pitch as thousands of people awaited Pope Francis in Munyonyo on Friday. Our Correspondent in Uganda Fr Paul Samasumo was there and gives us taste of the atmosphere.

Listen

When Pope Francis arrived at Munyonyo he would no doubt have been surprised to see the thousands of people awaiting him to thumping great African traditional drumming. The atmosphere was electric as the faithful waited with candles to the sound of “Holy Faaather! Holy Faaaather!”

Upon arrival at Munyonyo, Pope Francis blessed the cornerstone that will be used for the new shrine at Munyonyo.

I was personally touched by the many people at Munyonyo whom I saw kneeling in the mud because they were in the presence of the Holy Father.

Munyonyo has special significance for Catechists. A representative of the Catechists thanked Pope Francis for the financial subsidy that they receive through the Congregation for the Propagation of Faith.

Another important aside was the renaming of the road leading to Munyonyo. The local authorities have accepted the Church’ suggestion that the road be renamed, "Pope Francis road." This is in remembrance of this great day when Pope Francis became the first Pope ever to visit what will now become the second shrine of the UgandaMartyrs.

Travelling on the Apostolic journey to Africa, with Pope Francis,  I am Fr. Paul Samasumo.
