Kenyan Muslims and Christians unite against Al-Shabab bus attack

(Vatican Radio)  Militants attacked a bus yesterday in the northeastern region of Kenya, yet a show of unity by Christian and Muslim passengers frustrated their attack.

Listen to Devin Watkins' report:

The suspected Al-Shabab militants in Kenya on Monday who attacked a passenger bus in the northeastern Mandera region broke off their attack after Muslims in the group refused to separate from their Christian connationals.

The gunmen stopped the bus with heavy fire, shattering the bus’ front windshield.

One of the survivors was Siyad Sabdow. "

The militants then boarded the bus and ordered passengers to separate according to their religion.

Several Muslims in the group helped dress non-Muslim passengers with head garb before refusing the gunmen’s orders.

The Kenyan passengers told the militants "to kill them together or leave them alone", according to a local governor.

The militants showed signs of frustration and left after the group’s show of unity.

Kenyan Interior Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said the gesture showed that Kenyans are one nation, regardless of religion. He said, "

Two people were killed in the attack, one a non-Muslim who decided to run and was shot in the back, the other the driver of a lorry which was passing.

The event recalls a similar attack in November of 2014 in which Al-Shabab gunmen separated Christians from Muslims, shooting dead 28 Christians.
