Polish government under fire from opposition

(Vatican Radio) Poland's Parliament has passed a controversial law that regulates its Constitutional Tribunal despite protests from opposition parties. The right wing Law and Justice party won elections last month, giving it control of both houses of Parliament and support of the Presidency. It campaigned on Catholic moral principles, state intervention in the economy, free medication for those over 75, cash bonuses for children, financial support for the poor and higher taxes on corporations, especially banks.

“The case is clear,” says Poland’s president, Andrzej Duda of the Law and Justice Party. “It has a self-governing majority of the Polish Parliament but of course there is an opposition. And these protests are organized by the opposition. … It means democracy is working well.”

Correspondent Stefan Bos reports that critics fear the move will paralyze the country’s top court and make it unable to act as a check on the power of the country's new government.
