2016 Olympic Games comes to an end in Rio de Janeiro

(Vatican Radio) The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro came to an end on Sunday after 17 days of competition.

The United States led the medals table with 121, 46 of them gold.

Listen to the report by James Blears:

Among the most heartwarming stories of this Olympics was during the women’s 5000 metres, when New Zealand`s Nikki Hamblin and Abbey D`Agostino of the United States accidently collided,  with the American crashing to the track injured. Hamblin admirably stayed with Abbey helping her, abandoning her part in the completion. Nikki was awared the Pierre De Coubertin medal for fair play.

The next summer Olympics will take place in 2020 in Tokyo, Japan.
