Pope Francis urges Iraqi Chaldean bishops to be builders of unity

Pope Francis has urged leaders of the Chaldean Church to be builders of unity, favouring dialogue and collaboration between all actors of Iraqi society. The Pope was addressing bishops in Rome for the Synod of the Chaldeans, taking place from 4 to 8 October.

Pope Francis has called on people to “not forget the tragedy of persecution” in a letter sent Iraq Christians in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan.

Iraqi Chaldean Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako has expressed concern for the 120,000 refugees in northern Iraq who've fled the extremist militant group Islamic State.  "A new education" of young generations is needed to combat an extremist jihadi ideology he said.
