In India, founder of Christ College awarded “Padma Bhushan”


(29 Mar. 2007) : The government of India honoured Fr Gabriel Chiramel, the Founder of Christ College, at Trichur district in the South Indian state of Kerala, with one of India’s highest civil awards, the ‘Padma Bhushan’, on 23rd March, for his outstanding contribution in the fields of education and literature. An eminent educationalist, Fr Chiramel has founded numerous educational and humanitarian institutions, including the Christ College. Founded in 1956, the Christ College accredited by the Union Grants Commission, is one of the prestigious institutions of the country and caters to the holistic development of the youth through extra-curricular activities besides imparting academic knowledge. Fr Chiramel has founded notable educational institutions such as Carmel High School in1975, Bharatha Matha School in 1977, Deepthi Cultural Centre in1976 and Indian Institute of Christian Studies in 1983. Born in 1914, Fr Gabriel was ordained a priest in 1942. He started his teaching carer at the S.H College, Thevara, Kochi as a lecturer and then went on to serve as Professor and head of Zoology Dept. in the college.
